Nature Specialists!

Those who have visited Penang Butterfly Farm would have probably spotted these passionate fellow we call them as Nature Specialists. Hanging around the flight garden and sharing their hearts out about how wonderful the world of insects are.

Now that the bugs and the rest of the critters are long gone (more on this later…) these band of passionate fellow we call-OH, I’ve mentioned them already!

IMG_0191So, I was saying…they decided to get their hands on some used water bottles and some GOLDEN seeds.

Obviously, I was just exaggerating that part, the seeds are not really gold! Well, it’s as precious as gold since it has the power to actually create a positive change to this climate change situation we have going on.  But yeah, of course, not until they turn into lovely bundles of green. Still, you get what I mean right?

IMG_0163IMG_0148

Going back to what I was actually talking about, they decided to take on up-cycling as another hobby. It was such a waste to throw those water bottles anyway. Why not turn them into DIY hanging planters instead?

Check out the fruit of their labor!

We promise you, it’ll be more awesome once the plant grows and the flowers bloom.

Oh, about the bugs and the rest of the critters, they have gone off for a vacation as Penang Butterfly Farm is closed to the public until December 2015 for a major redevelopment.

A bigger and better experience is coming your way…

Sketching Penang Butterfly Farm

, March 2, 2015

SketchingPBF

During it’s 29 years in existence, it has probably been photographed a few thousands time. As its full transformation period approaches, Penang Butterfly Farm is immortalised by pencils and paintbrushes. With the sun shining brightly over the hills behind it and its hidden gems crawling and fluttering within its enclosure, it stands humbly to be drawn by a group of talented individuals that are known for their skill in art.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe group from Urban Sketchers Penang which was founded by Khoo Cheang Jin and Ch’ng Kiah Kiean took a trip to the farm with their daily weapons of art and captured the place on canvass and paper last Sunday, 1 March 2015.

Their works will be displayed at Penang Butterfly Farm’s retail outlet until the last day of its operation on 7 march 2015.

Some of the works captured Mr. David Goh’s heart, the founder of Penang Butterfly Farm and are now part of his collection.

Another year of Can-lah!

, November 27, 2014

Penang Butterfly Farm staff came out once again to lend a helping hand… or better yet, food.

“Can-lah” Food Drive is organised by Hard Rock Hotel Penang in order to make a difference in the lives of those living in poverty. They call on fellow kind-hearted individuals to help out. And we heard that call!

Can-lah

Here are the food donations from Penang Butterfly Farm staff with our friends from Hard Rock Hotel.

We also believe that, just ONE can will make a difference.

Let’s Get You Started with #GrowMeToKnowMe

, November 3, 2014

Thinking about saving the planet and don’t know where to start?

Start with a small potted plant.GMTKM

From 18 October to 17 November 2014, we are giving away 1000 plants in conjunction with our Grounbreaking Ceremony. To kickstart it, 200 plants were given away during the ceremony itself and followed by 20 plants each day at our souvenir outlet. More plants will be up for grabs at our booths during the Rock to Rock Run 2014 at Hard Rock Hotel Penang, at the Penang International Science Fair 2014 and during other events that we will be participating.

These are seedlings of nectar plants and food plants to several species of butterflies and we invite you to grow them in your own home. This is part of our responsibility as an eco-warrior and while we do our part, you will all be rewarded by the sight of “beautiful treasures of nature” fluttering around your backyard.

With this plant you may take part in the #GrowMeToKnowMe contest and stand a chance to win a Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 instant camera.

Here are the easy steps on how you can join the contest:

1. Snap a photo of your growing plant and post it on Instagram

2. Include a creative caption and identify the plant

3. Hashtag #GrowMeToKnowMe

4. Lastly, do not forget to tag us @penangbutterflyfarm

The lucky winners will be notified at the end of the campaign.

To make it a little bit easier, these are the packages where the seeds came from:

Other seeds are, sunflowers, African Marigold, Giant Zinnia, Sweet Basil and Balsam.

Now that you got your clues, it is just a matter of time until your plant grows at the right size for you to identify it.

Remember, changing the world doesn’t need to start with a grand gesture. Let’s change the world together, one plant at a time.

And don’t forget to get updates on our other social media sites about this campaign!

Rock to Rock Run 2014

, October 27, 2014

Another year of rocking good time!

On its 5th year now, the Rock to Rock Run organised by Hard Rock Hotel Penang is another success. This annual event help raised RM70,000 for improvement and development of SJK (C) Yok Eng in Sungai Udang, Seberang Prai.DSC02530DSC02486

Penang Butterfly Farm once again took part in this event as one of the main sponsor, as well as being the turning point for some 1,500 competitive runners.

To bring joy to the runners, our booth at Hard Rock Hotel Penang was also filled with fun activities.  Were you there too?

This year, we laid out a giant board game and named it Millipedes and Ladders!

You guessed it right, it is designed after the game Snakes and Ladders. And since we love our creepy crawlies so much, we threw in live millipedes for all to experience a massage and also to give the players some major goose bumps.

DSC02500Public announcement: no millipedes or humans were harmed in the making of and during this game. Although, they were a few screams here and there.

The lucky winners of the game received a mystery prize and a potted plant.  The potted plants are part of an ongoing campaign called, #GrowMeToKnowMe. For more details on this, you may visit http://butterfly-insect.com/growmetoknowme

There was also a doodle board with the phrase that is bugging us for so long… “If I were a butterfly…”

While waiting, some took up the challenge of creating an origami butterfly egg. It wasn’t easy, take our word for it or better yet-try it yourself at http://butterfly-insect.com/blog/egg-tastic-origami/

Meanwhile at around 6:00am, at Penang Butterfly Farm…

And then there was…

If you were there, give yourself a big pat on the back for joining this charity event. We hope you all enjoyed the run and activities as much as we did!
